Function:
The Community Organizer will gain real-world experience supporting the Executive Director in planning and documenting our annual advocacy campaigns.
Organizational Relationships:
The Community Organizer reports to the Executive Director and may also work with other staff and volunteers.
Organizational Background:
Established in 2014 and incorporated in 2018, the BCEdAccess Society is an organization of families of children and youth with disabilities and complex learners. We champion and support children and youth who have disabilities and who are complex learners to reach their full potential in BC education, and in all aspects of their lives. This is achieved through supporting families, sharing information, providing education to families, allies, professionals and students, providing community engagement and awareness, and other activities to promote equitable access to education and inclusion for all. We run a well respected annual parent/guardian advocacy conference, bringing together families, self-advocates, educators and allies of children and youth with disabilities. We also do research into the exclusion of students with disabilities from school and community, and other disability issues impacting children and youth. We advocate to local and provincial governments on behalf of families to improve accessibility in all aspects of the lives of children and youth with disabilities.

The main responsibilities of the Community Organizer during this contract period will be setting up and starting the execution of a campaign strategy based on one of our organization’s advocacy goals. Work will include researching successes in other organizations and jurisdictions, documenting and defining strategies and empowering volunteers and advocates, and working with the team to consult and execute.
Duties:
- Research successful actions taken by groups in BC and other jurisdictions to achieve results with government
- Strategize, define approach, and carry out actions to effect policy change at the district, provincial, national and international levels
- Develop materials to build coalitions, and help decision-makers and community leaders with an understanding of our advocacy goals and mission
- Organize efforts to recruit, train, and support members of the public to be empowered advocates who influence their community and local representative
- Prepare communications for social media and other relevant platforms and write campaign and impact report drafts as required
- Design evaluation tools to measure the efficacy of strategies and actions in meeting our target goals and to learn from the work being carried out and make recommendations
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Job Type: Contract, 8 week duration
Pay: $19.00 per hour
Hours: 30 hours per week
Anticipated Start Date: June 30 or ASAP
Location: Supervised telecommuting (online)
